First Year of Teaching 2010-2011
The Head Start Program I work at require us to have family style dining, so the kids can engage in conversation. However, at the lunch table anything can be talked about. Being my first full year teaching I had no idea how to response to this little girl statement. The Little Girl: Ms. Felecia you know my daddy die. Ms. Felecia: Oh I'm sorry to hear that!!!! The Little Girl: It's ok!!! I see him and talk to him sometimes. Ms. Felecia: Oh really!!!! After she said that I was speechless and turned to my assistant teacher for help.

On that awkward note, I recommend Tasty Talk: 40 Mealtime Conversation Starters from High Scope. I'd be willing to bet money that death is not in there. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will have to look into that. But that was so random. When she started the conversation it was out the blue.
ReplyDeleteFelecia that is funny and scary at the same time. I think, I would have done the same thing you did. I heard that children grieve different than we do. Give it sometime, the truth will come out soon.
